Va-y’chi

blessing sons

Each week on Shabbat
Parents repeat Jacob’s words
While blessing their sons

Genesis 48:20
So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you shall Israel invoke blessings, saying: God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.”

There is, of course, also a traditional blessing for daughters, which includes the names of our matriarchs Sarah. Rebecca, Rachel and Leah. You can read (and hear) the full blessings over children – which include the Priestly Benedictions – by clicking here.

Another traditional blessing is something we say together when we finish a Book of Torah.  With Va-y’chi we complete, for this year, our study of the Book of Genesis. So we say “Chazak, Chazak, V’nitchazeik” – be strong, be strong, and may we be strengthened together.
