Leviticus / Vayikra

G-d: “Follow My Laws”
I will provde rain, and peace
And make you fertile

If you don’t obey
Then there will be punishment
Bad things will happen

But G-d will forgive
Remember the covenant
When the sinning stops

This portion ends the Book of Leviticus

Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek

Disclaimer: I’m not a believer in the idea of a direct reward-for-obeying / punishment-for-sinning model of G-d’s response to our behavior. But this post is, I believe, a more-or-less accurate summary of what this week’s parasha literally teaches.

After all the talk
About the freeing of slaves
In Jubilee years

G-d says, “You’re my slaves
‘Cause I freed you from Egypt
I am Adonai”

S’firat HaOmer
Starting on Pesach, Day Two
Commanded this week

Count seven full weeks
Then, on the fiftieth day
Time for Shavuot

Fulfill this mitzvah each day

We are commanded
Don’t gossip or bear a grudge
Do not take revenge

But we’re just human
These aren’t easy to avoid
It’s takes some effort

Be holy like G-d?
We may never achieve it
Still, we keep trying

This week, the “scapegoat”
Carries away all the sins
The people have done

In our “modern” view
This might seem like the wrong way
To atone for sins

Yet still, in our day
“Others” are unfairly blamed
We make them scapegoats

Purification
For those with skin afflictions
Offerings to G-d

Three sheep and some wheat
For the priests to sacrifice
Is what’s commanded

But if that is more
Than the “leper” can afford
Less will still suffice

So service to G-d
Is accessible to all
Rich and poor alike

If a son is born
Ritual uncleanliness
Will last seven days

But if it’s a girl
The mother must wait two weeks
With status “unclean”

We know the story
Nadav, Abihu, strange fire
They died before G-d

Was it punishment
Or might it be possible
It was their reward?

Aaron and his sons
Remain in Communion Tent
Seven days and nights

Inauguration
Into their Priestly service
Would last a full week

The burnt offering
Fragrance appealing to G-d
Desert barbeque?
