The first commandment*
“I am Adonai your G-d”
But it’s more than that

Our G-d redeemed us
From Egyptian slavery
We can’t forget this

Because in large part
Our relationship with G-d
Is based on this act

[*The first commandment can be found in Exodus 20:2 "I am Adonai your G-d, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery"]

Beshalach

The waters parted
And the people sang with joy
“Who is like you, G-d!”

Darkness in Egypt
But the plague did not affect
Our ancestors’ homes

Two kinds of darkness
Physical, spiritual
Which do you think worse?

Click here or on the link above for a short essay about physical vs. spiritual darkness

Blood, frogs, lice, wild beasts
Then cattle disease. Boils, too!
The plagues have begun

But Pharaoh’s stubborn
At first of his own accord
Then with “help” from G-d

More plagues are coming
You can guess where this will lead
Freedom imminent

Shemot

The birth of Moses
Pharoah’s daughter adopts him
Our future leader

The Tabernacle
Erected in the desert
As G-d instructed

A cloud covered it
To show that it was filled with
The glory of G-d

When G-d’s cloud lifted
The people knew it was time
To travel again

G-d does some hiring
Betzalel, Oholiab
The Mishkan builders

But the work must stop
Each week to observe Shabbat
It’s G-d’s day of rest

What the priests once wore
Are now put on Torah scrolls
Robes, breastplates, turbans

G-d tells us to make
A menorah of pure gold
With seven branches

Not for Chanukah
But for the tabernacle
As G-d instructed

Mishpatim

Tough rules for children
Hurting or cursing parents
Is punished by death

That’s not done today
Some won’t even hit their kids
When they misbehave
