Miriam, timbrelsAll of the women, dancing"Sing to Adonai"
Exodus 15:20-21Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her in dance with timbrels. And Miriam chanted for them: "Sing to Adonai, who has triumphed gloriously; Horse and driver God has hurled into the sea."Miriam's song is a sort of coda to Shirat Hayam, the Song of the Sea. It's only two lines, and leaves us wanting more. In this week's Ten Minutes of Torah Rabbi Ellen Dreyfus has more on Miriam and her song - as imagined by Debbie Friedman, Ellen Frankel (in Five Books of Miriam) and Ruth Sohn (in The Torah: A Woman's Commentary).
